Matthew McConaughey Is Calling. How Far Will You Go?
President Bush's plans to drastically inflate volunteer numbers around the globe got a kick in the pants today with the launch of a new ad campaign complete with an overhaul of the Peace Corps website. The theme of the new campaign is "Life Is Calling. How Far Will You Go?"
The Peace Corps is committed to doubling its ranks within five years. Current enrollment totals about 7,000. Actors Matthew McConaughey and Eduardo Verastegui provide voiceovers in English and Spanish, respectively. If Matthew McConaughey can't convince people to sign up, who can?
The new website, with the same theme, was redesigned by Threespot Media. You can read the full story about the redesign here.
Here is the full story about how the new commercial was created by Omnicom's BBDO in Atlanta.

7000 -- that's it? I thought there were more volunteers.
How far will you go?? Just what does the Peace Corps expect you do when you get there if its asking that kind of question?
Actually you can get just about anywhere in the world in 24 hours if you plan it right. So getting there is nothing.
Its how long can you stay. Ain't it? At least that is what it comes down to when we put all the excuses aside.
Relying on the Judeo-Christian theme they could have used the concept of how much guilt do you wish to purge.
ie
How far can we shove the guiltdo up yer arse. ... Our country directors are trained to achieve maximum guiltdo efficiency. .... some volunteers have actually felt it right up to the edges of their hypothalamus'. Join the pc and really get a real rougerin and come home cleansed like no colonic therapy can achieve.
That's right 7000 pcvs and 10000 dc staff to do everything but support them. A budget cut will drop the vol load by fifty percent and leave DC untouched.
Actually I think if they dressed up a bunch of country directors like pimps and put em on a DC street corner where they could scream rap, grab their crotches and make silly signs with their hands it would be an accurate reflection of how the peace corps organization views volunteers. Obey your Puff Daddy or get bitch slapped fast.
I’d opt for:
Real Americans serve their country. Get REAL and serve in the Peace Corps. A personal epiphany. An American reality check. A life time of laughs.
40 years and nothing has changed. JFK’s wonderful concept run by a barrel of monkeys for real people to stupid to give up, who occasionally accomplish some beautiful things, and usually manage to make a few good friends.

'Matthew McConaughey Is Calling. How Far Will You Go?'.
As a prospective volunteer, I am concerned that this campaign will be too much and too fast. As it is, I have learned about various gaps in current administrative resources to handle PVC's safety, housing and in-country support issues.
Is there any mention of a corresponding growth in the capacity of the Peace Corps to handle the numbers?
I'd like to hear from current PVC's what they think.
