What's Wrong With This Country?

Did you hear about the woman who was trampled at a Florida Walmart in a crush of people trying to grab 29 dollar DVD players at the after-Thanksgiving sale? If you haven't, here's the blurb:

ORANGE CITY, Fla. - A mob of shoppers rushing for a sale on DVD players trampled the first woman in line and knocked her unconscious as they scrambled for the shelves at a Wal-Mart Supercenter.

Patricia VanLester had her eye on a $29 DVD player, but when the siren blared at 6 a.m. Friday announcing the start to the post-Thanksgiving sale, the 41-year-old was knocked to the ground by the frenzy of shoppers behind her. read more

You know, this is sad. I don't understand how people can care more about saving a few bucks on personal electronic gear that about human life, but that the way it is.

It's really indicative as to what's wrong with our society, isn't it? Almost every blogger has a wish list of material things they want people to buy for them or donation buttons, asking strangers to pay them for what is ultimately a hobby.

Re: Walmart: I smell LAWSUIT! I'd SUE THEIR ASSES! What really gets me is that all Walmart offered to do for the poor woman was to hold a DVD player for her to BUY LATER! Yeah, that's good customer relations.

What is wrong with this country is the same that is wrong with countries that kill soccer players if they lose a game. People take things a little too seriously. It's obvious the blantant disregard for this woman is deplorable. However I don't view that as the fault of Wal-Mart. The people that ran over her are at fault. Period. Does Wal-Mart REALLY have to put up a sign saying, "Hey, don't run over people. You might injure or kill them." I mean come ON. A little personal responsibility on the part of the CUSTOMERS is necessary here.

I will agree with you Jenben that Wal-Mart is showing their capitalistic ass by not just writing off $30 and giving her the dvd player. But then this is par for the course with Wal-Mart. If you are not a stockholder, they could really give a damn about you. Customer or not.

Come on everyone.

This is just America's version of the running of the bulls. It's our festival de St. Fermin. And typically, there's a lot less character, romance and history involved.

But just like smart people know not to get in front of a mass of charging bulls, intelligent people know not to get in the way of the huddled masses and highly discounted electronic equipment.

If you're insane enough to go to WalMart at 6am the day after Thanksgiving, you assume the risk. I do feel a little more sympathy for this woman than some tool who got skewered in Pamplona - but we all saw this coming.

"Traffic was reportedly heavy, but we believe Wal-Mart missed their sales plan for the day, especially in electronics," Shari Eberts, retail analyst with J.P. Morgan, said in a research note.

Damn. All that trampling for naught.

Looks like a missed a good deal. Damn! Oh well! Guess I'll just keep watching those movies on VHS. On a more serious note, consumerism has definitely gotten out of hand. I myself am guilty of buying more crap than I need. I look around my apartment all the time and just shake my head and say to myself -- what the hell was I thinking. Yet, it doesn't stop me from going out and buying more crap. Sometimes I wish I could just walk away from it all but it’s easier said than done.
