Visit Samoa Week

Visit Samoa Week

Ok, so it's not Visit Samoa Week. I doubt there even is such an animal. However Hurricane/Cyclone Heta is visiting the islands. My friends and former colleagues are probably taking cover and cursing the weather. I only hope that the winds and rain are strong enough to make the Country Director's house slide off Mt. Vaea, hopefully with him inside it.

In case your geography isn't so hot, Samoa is right there where that little "20" is on the map, straight up from New Zealand and right below that big red swirling mass which represents 100+ mile and hour winds and a considerable amount of percipitation.

Actually Samoa is under that beeg swirl. That is Fiji down in the 19 teens. Samoa is about 12.5 Heta went right over the place. storm damage but it didn't seem to take any lives. Heta went over Nuie on the 6th and 7th. There is nothing there so I would imagine that they fared worse than Samoa.

Yeah we took cover. The volunteers still in country (Many, many were out on holiday) were out in a hotel to weather the storm.. it was intense but we missed the worst of the storm. There were a few tonados in the storm and they uprooted many of the large banyan trees in Apia. 4 (maybe 5) of the large trees along beach road were uprooted and shattered. was quite a spectacle to cruise around after the storm. Luckily there were very few injuries. We got plenty of notice so the damage was minimized.
