Before Sunset

Has anyone out there seen Before Sunset with Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy? I picked it up today at the Oakland Public Library and it srtuck a chord with me. It's about two young people who meet traveling in Europe when they are 23, arrange a rendevous that never happens and lose track of each other for 9 years because in their young, idealistic minds, there was no need to exhange contact infomation. They meet up again in Paris when Celine (Delpy) finds out that Jesse (Hawke) is on a book tour selling his semi-autobigraphical work about their brief fling. This movie is basically a naturalistic conversation about love and what could have been with Paris as a backdrop. Only when I was watching the featurette did I find out that it was a sequel to an earlier film, Before Sunrise, shot 9 years ago, with the same cast about how they met on a train in Austria and fall towards love. I queue'd it up my Netflix and I am so interested to see it.

I tried to watch "before sunrise" when it came out on video and couldn't get past the first 10/15 minutes. It just irritated the shit out of me. I liked the premise but just didn't feel convinced by the execution. Also, Ethan Hawke struck me as a bit of a wanker. I think if he changed his stage name to Ethan Wanker why then I could dig his pose, man.

Obviously, I can't speak for Before Sunrise, but I know where you're coming from. Not Hawke's best stuff here (for my movie his best work is in Snow Falling on Cedars). Before Sunset is not a great movie, but interesting nonetheless. I think part of it is that we are so used to perfectly polished dialogue delivered with impeccible timing by remarkable actors, that when something different comes along, like this, where normal rhythms of conversations, including awkward pauses and interruptions and all the other stupid shit that people actually say when they speak to each other, it makes us slightly uncomfortable. At least that's how I felt when I was watching this movie. I looked at Ethan Hawke's character and some of the absurd shit that he would say, not the long monologues, but the little conversational bits, one liners, throw away nothings, and I thought, that's me. That's the exact stupid shit that comes out of my mouth when I'm trying to talk to someone. Anyway, I found it hard to look at it and tough to look away from at the same time.

Saw both movies. Liked the first better than the second. But would totally recommend both. Well at least the romantic side of me would.

Speaking of "before sunrinse/sunset/my bowl movement". Have you seen "Kung Fu Hustle"? I have and it blew me away. Frenetic, kinetic brilliance. It's just absolutely cemeneted my opinion that currently Asian cinema rules the roost. You name the genre and they're nailing it.

Have not seen Kung Fu Hustle, but I have Netflix'd it and will let you know.

I finally saw Before Sunrise. Again I have mixed feelings about it, but that since that experience hits home for me in so many ways, I have to fall on the side of, I like it.

Some day when I'm bored and feeling reminiscent, I will write about some of my pre-blog travel experiences.
