Messenger Bag = Man-Purse
I just started a started a job in the city (SF) and I notice that just about every working age male carries some sort of messenger bag. Where younger men used to carrry backpacks and white collar guys, brief cases, now everyone has a Timbut2 orJack Spade or Frietag or whatever. To me, this is just an excuse for men to carry a purse. Do I carry one? Of course. I need to a place to store my umbrella (weather in the city is notorious unpredictable, my book (I need something to do on the bu, right?), my ipod, keys, gloves, etc. etc.

No one carries those here. Is that a big thing in Oz? Seems like it would an invitation to get your brains beaten in.
Look around my friend. I'm sure if you venture down to the Castro you'll find plenty of man-bags/man-purses.
"Is that the big thing in Oz?" I'm sure it's huge in certain parts of Oxford Street in Sydney. It also always seemed to have a large following amongst (straight) middle aged German men. I don't know why but I'd pair it with their German sense of humour.

'Messenger Bag = Man-Purse'.
Messenger bag does not equal Man-purse.
Man-bag - you know, the one that you hold on to with a wrist strap, usually made of leather - equals Man-purse.
You work in SF now keep you must polish up on your fashion sense otherwise they'll cotton on that you're from the East bay.
