Sheer Utter Disappointment

Sheer Utter Disappointment

One of big complaints about my Comcast DVR is that if you set a recording, the DVR will stop at the scheduled time, not when the broadcast of the event actually stops. At first I would record programs after the event. Then I realized that I could modify the settings so that the DVR would continue to record for up to two hours after the event, which is usually more than you could need. It pisses me off that I still have to do this and I think Comcast needs to figure out a way to continue recording until the event ends. Period end of story. The DVR will be an inferior product until they can figure that out.

So. Wimbledon. I wasn't about to wake up at 5am like I used to do, and I was going to be out all day, so I scheduled a recording and I set it to finish an hour after the scheduled end. I thought that would be more than enough. Shit, the event was scheduled for 6 hours. How could that not be enough?

So I get home from my rides and I start watching and it's just the most exciting match I've ever seen. Incredible tennis. Federer looked done but kept fighting back, fending off Championsip Points. Nadal saved endless break points against him. Both players were making the most incredible shots. Johnny Mac lent his incredible to commentary to what turned out to be the longest final match in the history of Wimbledon.

I was able to fast forward through the weather delays, which was great, but fairly soon into to the 5th set, I realized I was in race between the end of the recording and the end of the match. After each game, I would check the time left on the recording. I kept thinking, it's ok, I'll get through the tiebreak, no problem, but I remembered that there's no tiebreak in the 5th set of a major and I was fucked. There just wasn't going to be enough time.

Sure enough, NBC comes back from commercial with Federer up 7-6 in 5th. Amazingly, all he needed to do was to break Nadal for one time and he'd have staged the most remarkable comeback after being down two sets and Championship Point and the fucking recording ended. I wanted to throw a brick through the TV.

I calmed down, and found the result online. It was so disappointing. I don't dislike Nadal, but I'm a huge Federer fan and I really would have liked to see him win again. Looks like tennis is undergoing another one of those inevitable changing of the guards. Federer might win a few more majors, but it's Nadal's tour now until someone takes it away. My hat is off to him for achieving what no men's player has done since the Borg era, win the French and Wimbledon in the same season. Viva Nadal!

(this just happened again tonight at the end of the 3rd stage of the Tour de France-at least Versus shows the TdF again and again, so I can see the finale in a few minutes.

I'm not a big tennis person, but I watched most of the match. It's was incredible and I have to say that I found myself rooting for Nadal -- perhaps because I felt there needed to be a changing of the guard. Of course, thats not to take anything away from Federer. He is a great champion. However,to keep the game interesting, I like to see a bit of competition and Nadal sure did that on Sunday night.
