PEACE CORPS DOCUMENTS

REMARKS OF SENATOR JOHN F. KENNEDY
How many of you who are going to be doctors, are willing to spend your days in Ghana? Technicians or engineers, how many of you are willing to work in the Foreign Service and spend your lives traveling around the world?

STATEMENT UPON SIGNING ORDER ESTABLISHING THE PEACE CORPS
I have today signed an Executive Order providing for the establishment of a Peace Corps on a temporary pilot basis. I am also sending to Congress a message proposing authorization of a permanent Peace Corps. This Corps will be a pool of trained American men and women sent overseas by the U.S. Government or through private institutions and organizations to help foreign countries meet their urgent needs for skilled manpower.

THE PEACE CORPS IS BORN: 1960-1962
The night was clear and mild and somewhat to the campaign party’s surprise, a very large turnout of students, estimated at ten thousand, had waited up for the senator. Making his way to the Student Union Building with some difficulty and taking a position on the steps there, John Kennedy spoke his first words in public about the possibility of a Peace Corps.

SO YOU WANT TO JOIN THE PEACE CORPS?
Ahhhhh, the Peace Corps. Meandering through a rural village in an exotic place where no one speaks your language. Palm trees and romantic monsoons. Elephants and water buffaloes lumbering past your front porch. Grass huts and smiling children looking up at you adoringly.

HEARING ON THE PEACE CORPS CHARTER FOR THE 21ST CENTURY ACT
Statement of Senator Chris Dodd, Chairman Senate Subcommittee on Western Hemisphere, Peace Corps and Narcotics Affairs, Returned Peace Corps Volunteer from The Dominican Republic.

KEEPING KENNEDY'S PROMISE - THE NUMBERS GAME
One of the finest books written about the history of the Peace Corps is "Keeping Kennedy's Promise" by C. Payne Lucas and Kevin Lowther. Published in 1978 in a limited edition, the book is almost impossible to find today.

THE PEACE CORPS STRATEGIC PLAN 2000-2005
The Peace Corps is pleased to provide its revised Government Performance and Results Act (GPRA) strategic plan reflecting the agency’s long-standing commitment to the unique role that its Volunteers perform to further the three goals set forth in the Peace Corps Act

PEACE CORPS FIRST AID KIT
The Peace Corps Medical Officer provides volunteers with a first-aid kit that contains basic items needed to prevent and treat and illnesses that might occur during service. Kit items can be periodically restocked at your Peace Corps medical office.
